The Children's Museum of Virginia is located in Olde Towne Portsmouth, one of the East Coast's most charming and historic neighborhoods. In addition to the great architecture and beautiful harbor views, there are a whole lot of other things to see and do, all within a seven-block area. Here are just a few of your many choices as you make a day of it in Olde Towne Portsmouth.
 
Best Times to Visit. We are a popular attraction and there are some times when we are very busy. If you would like to plan your visit to avoid those times here are some guidelines you might want to consider. Please remember it is difficult for us to predict our attendance accurately. During the school year we are most busy with school groups from 9:00 to 12:00. In the summer when it rains we are very busy. Weekends are usually busy around holiday periods. And, we are busy during school holiday breaks.
 
The Elizabeth River Ferry. Paddlewheel across the harbor between downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth on this ferry that's as fun as it is practical. It only costs $1.00 each way.
 
Picnic Area. Gazebos on Middle Street Mall outside the Children's Museum provide a perfect place to sit. Benches are also available at High Street Landing for a scenic lunch spot.
