Your House, My House arrives
for the Summer

YOUR HOUSE, MY HOUSE opens at
the Children’s Museum of Virginia, 221 High Street, Portsmouth
on June 7 and runs through August 24, 2008.
Take a fantastic journey into the homes of people around the
world in this hands-on traveling exhibit designed and built by
the Children’s Museum of Memphis for the Youth Museum Exhibit
Collaborative. People live in all kinds of housing – large
houses, portable houses, small houses, apartments, houseboats –
the list is long. Visitors will learn how geography, climate,
availability of materials, lifestyle, tradition and culture all
influence the kind of house we live in.
The environment in which a house is built can affect its design
as illustrated in the “My House” area. Here visitors step into
three model homes: A Mongolian herder’s ger, an m’bure from the
tropics of Fiji and a stilt house from a Malaysian fishing
village. Children use a tabletop model of a Mongolian ger that
can be disassembled and packed up as they figure out how to pack
the ger on the backs of two camels. They can also rebuild the
ger after it has been unpacked. Fun activities in the house
settings help children make connections between what happens in
their own homes and what happens in these houses. Most of the
activities are linked to the notion of environment.
In “Houses, Houses Everywhere” a hexagonal kiosk features six
categories of housing found in various parts of the world.
Compare similarities in houses scattered all over the globe and
match houses to their environment.
The “Design Center” presents a custom software program that
allows the visitor to choose house elements and build a house on
the computer screen. A drafting table resembling that found in
an architect’s office provides the opportunity for creative
design the old-fashioned way – with paper and pencil.
“Build Your Own” provides three tabletop areas with materials
for building miniature house models.
